Het monumentale “Hanengevecht in Vlaanderen” werd in 1882 door Emile Claus geschilderd en hij gooide er datzelfde jaar hoge ogen mee op het Salon van Parijs. Claus beeldt er voornamelijk volkse figuren (cafébazen, vlashandelaars, een pijlenraper, spoorwerkers…) op af. Een bijgebouw van herberg “De Groene Lanteern” in de Stormestraat in Waregem, was in die tijd de plaats bij uitstek voor het bijwonen van de omstreden hanengevechten.
