Emile Claus, “The kingfishers”, 1891

Description

For the masterpiece “The Kingfishers” from 1891, Emile Claus was perhaps inspired by the novella of the same name by the Waregem writer Léonce Ducatillon (pseudonym Max Van Vijve). Instead of the Keukelmeersen (the current Rainbow Stadium with the two stadium ponds in Waregem), Emile Claus chose the Leie as the setting for the playing children who ventured onto the frozen river with their ice chairs.
