“Did you know that this is not an old castle?” asks Walter at the Sterckshof. “It was built in 1932 and is named after Gerard Sterck, a wealthy merchant who owned a lot of land here in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.” The Sterckshof is for sale. “For many years, the Silver Museum was housed here. That collection has since been taken over by the diamond museum DIVA in the city. Part of the castle is used for hospitality, the rest is empty.”
From the Sterckshof, we walk further along the green Eksterlaarpad. “For 250 years - until the Sint-Rochuskerk was opened in 1895 - the Fredeganduskerk was the only church in Deurne. Believers would walk several times a week via this avenue from Deurne-Zuid to the Fredeganduskerk in Deurne-Noord. They would relieve themselves in the grass edges along this walking path. So this was our fragrant avenue,” winks Walter.
