Artist Jan van Imschoot places history at the very center and integrates it into his paintings in a contemporary way. For the staging of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, he uses children. To make it clear who belongs to which army, he uses boys for the French army and girls for the Flemish army.
The idea of having children depict the battle comes from the ‘Lords of Zichem’. In it, ‘De Witte’ and his friends dress up after reading ‘The Lion of Flanders’, written by Hendrik Conscience. They make use of objects from their immediate surroundings and their own imagination to recreate the Battle of the Golden Spurs.
