Croix de Henumont - Remouchamps

This cross is also known as the Croix des Français (because the remains of French soldiers who took part in the famous Battle of the Redoute on September 17, 1794 were found at its foot) and sometimes as the Rodje Creû.

In 'Le Vieux-Liège, February 22, 1922':

“At the bend of the road that leads from Sougné to Henumont, opposite the gate of the Montjardin park , stands a cross of enormous oak beams joined together in the most unusual way... I strongly suspect that this cross is made from pieces of the old feudal gallows of the seigneury of Montjardin.

A few years ago, while digging at the foot of this cross to plant young fir trees, human remains, French uniform buttons of the 1st Republic and a cannonball were unearthed . I think I can conclude that this cross marks the grave of one of the French soldiers who, on September 18, 1794, led by a man named Willem van Kin, carried out the daring turning movement that enabled General Jardon to conquer the Sprimont plateau. taking Latour's Austrian troops. It would be doubly interesting to recall the memory of this Frenchman who, as a moving symbol, slept in the shadow of these fragments of the Ancien Régime.
