On November 16, 1980, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the local chapter of the Red Cross, a tree was planted in the city park of Aywaille. On the occasion, a monument in honor of the Red Cross was inaugurated.
It was the first monument of its kind in Belgium . The ceremony was attended by Mr Hullebroeck, Director General of the Belgian Red Cross, and Mr Paternostre, President of the National Blood Union.
