The Merelbos is a quiet little forest of just over 5 hectares near the Merelwijk, on the edge of the village. The land is owned by the city of Izegem and was planted in 1992. The management is carried out by the Agency for Nature and Forest of the Flemish Government.
In planting, attention was paid to creating different layers. The highest layer consists of trees such as birch, ash, alder, and oak. Below, you will find shrubs such as blackthorn, hazel, and rowan. The shrubs create a gradual transition between the tall trees and the low herb layer, providing a valuable habitat for many insects and a whole range of songbirds.
The Merelbos is also a pleasant resting and walking area for people! Right next to the Merelbos is 't Venster, a center specialized in care and support for adults with acquired brain injury (ABI). Thanks to the Merelpad, a specially constructed forest walking path in dolomite, people who use the day and residential support from 't Venster can also fully enjoy nature here.
