Description

The building offered the lock keeper and his family a comfortable living environment close to the workplace, so that he was always available to operate the lock.

Astene's lock house is a popular tourist attraction . Visitors can explore the building and learn about the history of the lock and the role of the lock keeper. Guided tours and informative displays provide insight into the operation of the lock, the life of the lock keeper and the historical significance of the lock house.

Achilles Vanderlinden, the grandfather of author Hugo Claus, was security guard there. His mother Germaine grew up there.

Today (2024) there is a café with a beautiful terrace and a mischievous manager.
