Holy Heart Church
This is the starting point of the walking and cycling tour for Open Monument Day 2024 in Zele. On this tour, you will get to know the river Durme and the activities that took place around this river in the past. You will also learn about the Durmen neighborhood, named after the river. This name already appears in the tithe register of the Abbey of Werden from the 11th-12th century. Besides the river, we want to highlight two figures during this tour: Canon Adolf Van der Moeren (1836-1913), a Leuven professor of theology who meant a lot to the neighborhood and was honored with a statue in front of the rectory, and André Bogaert (1920-1986), a multimedia abstract expressionist artist.
We start here, at the Holy Heart Church. The predecessor of the current church was a Neo-Gothic structure from 1888. In 1975, the old church was demolished and replaced by the current place of worship, a low brick hall church in post-war modernist style. Fortunately, a number of Neo-Gothic ornaments, such as the stained glass windows from 1908 by Joseph Osterath, have been incorporated from the old church into the new one. In the partially attached bell tower hangs the old bell, which was joined by a small carillon in 2006.
