Here on the Steenberg of Wommersom, the quartzites of Tienen were mined. This was also done near Rommersom. Even in prehistory, people were fond of these hard stones for making tools. You can find artifacts of prehistoric stone tools in this area. You have a good chance of finding them right after a farmer plows the field.
Later, this rock was also used as a local building stone. The formation of these quartzites is linked to the climate of the Paleogene period (56 million years ago). The silica-rich groundwater dried up very quickly during dry periods, leaving behind hard quartzite layers. It was a sultry 30 °C on average here in Flanders back then. It would never be that warm again.
