Castle of Regelsbrugge
Little is known about the origins and the earliest design of the castle of Regelsbrugge, also known as the castle of Schotte. However, it is known that the castle, owned by Count Jozef de Wauthier de Regelsbrugghe, was extensively remodeled around 1795 with the addition of a floor, causing the slender towers to lose their graceful elegance. In 1878, one of the side wings was demolished.
On June 2, 1930, at a public auction, tanner Hipoliet Schotte acquired 'Regelsbrugghe' and the estate. The castle was demolished in 1933 on the orders of Mr. Schotte. In 1935, he had a new castle built in neotraditional style designed by architect Van Overstraeten from Ypres, with only the two older corner towers remaining. After two generations of the Schotte family, the castle of Regelsbrugge stood empty for a number of years. In 2014, the 18-hectare estate, including the castle and outbuildings, was sold to real estate agent Peter De Winne, who renovated it thoroughly and has since been living there.
