The source of the Dijle is located about a kilometer from the village center of Houtain-le-Val (near the border of Hainaut and Walloon Brabant) at an altitude of 145 meters. It is a spring river, which, in addition to the water from its own source, also takes in the water from numerous tributaries and streams. Even before the Dijle reaches Sint-Agatha-Rode, it has already received water from the Thyle, the Train, and the Orne. In Sint-Agatha-Rode, the water from the Laan (also Lane and Lasne) flows into the Dijle; in Sint-Joris-Weert, the same happens with the Nethen. In Neerijse, the IJse flows into the Dijle, and in Oud-Heverlee, the Vaalbeek. Nevertheless, there are few floods in this part of the Dijle basin: unlike rain-fed rivers, the water supply in spring rivers is quite constant throughout the year.
