These are 11 statues of the 600,000 statues of the outdoor artwork in Ypres at De Palingbeek "COMING WORLD REMEMBER ME". These 11 statues symbolize the 11 fallen soldiers of Michelbeke. The World War 1914-1918 devastated the lives of countless young men, fallen, physically or mentally irreparably injured. Today we cannot imagine how much the population suffered under the horrors that the war brought. Michelbeke had about 960 inhabitants at that time. Eleven of them fell, including the brothers Henri and Jan-Baptist Meerschaut. Some are buried in military cemeteries, while others' bodies were never found. They are known as "The Unknown Soldier". We want to never forget our fallen soldiers of Michelbeke, which is why eleven statues from Ypres are now gathered here. Eleven, meaning one statue for each fallen soldier from our small village. The names and photographs of these men can be found on the memorial stone located at the entrance of the church square.
