The semi-circular benches in Blauwtorenplein are not shaped that way for no reason. They follow the contours of the Blue Tower that stood here for centuries. The Blue Tower was built in 1313 as part of the medieval fortifications of Antwerp. Initially, it served as a defense tower, and later also as storage space for gunpowder. In 1879, the tower was demolished despite heavy protests.
The name of the tower referred to the blue slates on the roof. During archaeological research in 2010, just before the renovation of the square, it was discovered that the tower had functioned as a lock complex around 1500. The Herentalse stream flowed through here into the city.
