De halfronde zitbanken op het Blauwtorenplein hebben die vorm niet zomaar. Ze volgen de contouren van de Blauwe Toren die hier eeuwenlang stond. De Blauwe Toren werd gebouwd in 1313 als onderdeel van de middeleeuwse omwalling van Antwerpen. Aanvankelijk deed hij dienst als verdedigingstoren, later ook onder meer als opslagruimte voor kruit. In 1879 werd de toren ondanks zwaar protest afgebroken.
De naam van de toren was een verwijzing naar de blauwe leistenen op het dak. Tijdens archeologisch onderzoek in 2010, vlak voor de heraanleg van het plein, werd ontdekt dat de toren rond 1500 een functie als sluizencomplex kreeg. De Herentalse vaart stroomde langs hier de stad binnen.
