Before WWII, it was a sanatorium for sick children from the textile industry in Ghent. Later, the Residentie Astrid was built on this site. During WWII, the German military used the building as accommodation for their soldiers who manned batteries. The building suffered heavy damage and could no longer be used as a sanatorium. Until 1967, the building was used as the neighborhood school Duinen. In the 1967-1968 school year, the school moved to its current location on Schoollaan (near the town hall).
