Hugo Bollen is a Belgian mining engineer who devised the user-friendly junction system to signpost cycling and walking routes. The cycling junction numbered 1 was established in the village of Ellikom, not far from the Center Parcs resort Erperheide. But it wasn't the first sign! Together with former miners, he placed the first signs at the station of As towards Maaseik. They were blue because the Flemish government did not allow green signs. The network opened in July 1995. From the very beginning, it was a great success.
