“The largest ditches were not excavated, but formed naturally,” says guide Frans. “They have been part of a clever water system that protected Mechelen from flooding since the 12th century.” In the 19th century, many ditches were filled in due to odor and health risks, but the city is now gradually reversing that. For instance, the Nieuwe Melaan was reopened in 2007 and received international acclaim.
A remarkable remnant is the Groen Waterke, covered with duckweed. “It is actually a remnant of the Melaan ditch that was not covered or filled in here,” our guide Frans explains. “The beautiful historical building with a turret next to the Groen Waterke dates back to the year 1500.” Along the way, we see various tiles depicting droplets. “They symbolize the ancient little ditches that cross the street.”
