At the corner of Befferstraat and Rik Woutersstraat, a green area was created in the spring of 2016, the Rik Wouters Garden. "The garden is 700 square meters in size and features a lawn, play elements, benches, and bike racks. In Mechelen, you can find many quiet spots in the city in recent years. The artist and former neighborhood resident Rik Wouters is referenced through a mural by former city artist Gijs Vanhee and a bronze self-portrait.
The reopening of the waterways also plays a role here. "The waterway that flowed here at the beginning of the 20 th century has been uncovered again with a depth of 60 centimeters, and there are elevated seating edges so that people can enjoy the space comfortably. In 2017, the project won the public award of the Flemish Public Space Prize."
