You are here in front of a part of the old flax weaving and spinning mill that has seen ups, but also many downs. When the River Lys burst its banks, the workshop was completely flooded. Occasional fires also put a spanner in the works. At its peak, just before World War II, as many as 600 looms were operated here by 950 workers. Many of the buildings and the factory chimney were demolished, including for the widening of the River Lys. Since 2010, this section has served as office space with residential units above. The name “De Kien” refers to the history of this then much larger site.
