Alden Biesen is the largest castle domain between the Loire and the Rhine. The restoration cost Flanders a fortune, but it was worth it. If you don't have to watch the clock, be sure to set aside some time for - for example - a visit to the permanent exhibition about the history of the gigantic complex, or a walk in the English landscape park and the French garden.
It was a land commandery, the headquarters of a bailiwick or province of the Teutonic Order in the land of Maas and Rhine during the Ancien Régime. The Alden Biesen castle complex has since been developed into a cultural center of the Flemish Government. It serves as a conference center and is also a cultural-historical attraction.
