The monument 'Wannes van Lichtert' by artist Tom Frantzen was unveiled in May 2000 and is a tribute to the many unknown residents of Kempen who once cultivated the sparse sandy soils of the region. Shepherd Wannes is depicted kneeling at a mysterious light radiating from the earth, referencing the word 'light' in Lichtaart.
At the bottom are the hamlets mentioned that together form Lichtaart: Hukkelbergen, Stenen, Achterlee, Hoebenschot, Plaats, Leistraat, and Rielen. Lichtaart itself is, along with Tielen, a part municipality of the main municipality Kasterlee. This has been the case since the major municipal merger of 1977; prior to that, they were each independent municipalities.
