The iconic benches on the Zeedijk

Description

Shortly after the Second World War (1947), the first solid wooden benches appeared along the Zeedijk of Middelkerke. Initially green and white, they were later painted in the colors of Middelkerke: blue and white. These first solid wood benches were a design by Middelkerke resident Rudolf Lombaert and were built by local carpenter Maurice Minu using 'Congolese wood'. Over time, they have remained inextricably linked with the image of tourist Middelkerke.
