The renovation of the seawall in Westende was carried out in phases between 2021 and 2023, with the festive inauguration of the new, green seawall and wave-reducing extension (GDU) on June 24, 2023. The project is part of the master plan for coastal defense. It includes a combination of a grass embankment and a 'hard' wave-reducing extension embankment for better protection and an enhanced promenade.
Between the two promenades, a botanical garden has been created with specific coastal and salt-loving plants.
