Standing on the banks of the Scheldt in Schellebelle, time slows down for a moment. The ferry is the only way to cross the river here, and it still happens exactly as it should: at the rhythm of the water. For hikers and cyclists, it's the "golden gate" to the Kalkense Meersen , one of the largest and most tranquil nature reserves in the region.
The ferry is managed by the Flemish government (Agency for Maritime Services and Coast) and is completely free for pedestrians and cyclists. It is a public service that guarantees the connection between the two banks.
On both banks, there's a bell or a reporting system. The ferryman sails back and forth on request. The short ferry ride offers a unique 360-degree view of the Scheldt Arch and the tower of St. John the Baptist Church.
