The religious turmoil of the 16th and 17th centuries between Catholics and Protestants spared Lombardsijde and its population.
From that dark period also originated the devotion to Our Lady of Lombardsijde, a washed-up, miraculous statue of Mary. The former town thus became an important pilgrimage site for fishermen and especially for those sailing to Iceland. The statue survived many wars and was sometimes protected by the inhabitants at the risk of their own lives. In the current church, you can still admire the statue on the left side altar. You can also see some ex-votos that were donated by fishermen. All the miracles attributed to the statue are depicted in the stained glass windows.
