Saint Roch is primarily known as the patron saint of the plague. In the area around Aalst, he later took on a special significance for hop cultivation.
The connection between Saint Roch and hops dates back to at least the 16th century. In Aalst, a confraternity of Saint Roch was established in 1516 during a time when a plague epidemic was raging. Roch was invoked against infectious diseases, as well as plagues that affected livestock and crops. For hop farmers, a healthy harvest without diseases was crucial.
