At Martelarenplein, you walk over the graves of several fallen soldiers from the Belgian Revolution of 1830. The revolutionaries did not know what to do with the bodies of the fallen and decided to bury some of the dead in the square. The Provisional Government decided in 1831 to make the square a national cemetery for the victims of the revolution. In 1838, an impressive monument with a statue and crypt was also erected. The name of the square was permanently changed to Martelarenplein.
