Op het Martelarenplein loop je bovenop een aantal gesneuvelden van de Belgische Revolutie van 1830. De revolutionairen wisten toen geen raad met de lichamen van de gesneuvelden, en besloten ze om een aantal van de doden te begraven op het plein. Het Voorlopig Bewind besloot in 1831 om van het plein een nationale begraafplaats voor de slachtoffers van de revolutie van te maken. In 1838 werd er ook een indrukwekkend monument met standbeeld en crypte opgericht. De naam van het plein veranderde definitief in Martelarenplein.
