The Atomium was built for the World Expo in Brussels in 1958, the so-called Expo '58, as a symbol for the metal steel. The nine spheres represent the crystal structure of iron, magnified 165 billion times. The building was designed by Architect André Waterkeyn. The top sphere of the Atomium was named after its designer André Waterkeyn following his death in 2005.
