The Baudelostraat refers to the former Baudelo abbey, which was covering this area.
The abbey was one of the largest abbeys in Ghent, during the 17th century. Unfrotunately, not much is left otday of that old glory. At the end of the 18th century the monks were driven away from the abbey by the French Republicans. They changed the church in a Temple of Reason'. It became a school.
The abbey garden was transformed in a herb garden, called the Baudelopark. Unfortunaltey, the construction of the Bibliotheekstraat destroyed a big part of the garden. Only a few unique old trees remain stand. After 100 years, they moved this herb garden to the Ledeganckstraat, where the University herb garden stil is today.
