The Baudelostraat refers to the former Baudelo Abbey, which was located at this site.
This abbey was one of the largest abbeys in Ghent in the 17th century, but very little of its former glory can be seen today. At the end of the 18th century, the monks were expelled from the abbey by the French Republicans. They transformed the church into a 'Temple of Reason'.
In 1797, the monastery was reformed into the Central School, which would lay the foundation for the Athenaeum. During that period, the abbey garden was transformed into a herb garden, the Baudelopark, which was severely mutilated by the construction of Bibliotheekstraat. Only a number of unique centuries-old trees have remained. In 1903, this herb garden moved to Ledeganckstraat.
