Train walk Diest - Averbode - Testelt

From the station of Diest we immediately go up to the beautiful Fort Leopold, and then past the military airfield of Schaffen where the paratroopers learn to jump parachute. Over the wooded countryside north of Diest we reach the Gerhagen nature reserve which, together with the Averbood forests and heathland, forms one of the largest contiguous forest massifs in Flanders. Stretched coniferous forests, heathlands, beautiful fens... sometimes it is difficult to imagine yourself here in Flemish Brabant. In the middle of this green ocean lies the majestic Abbey of Averbode, with its brasserie. Then we stay for a while in the forest and heathland, as the route descends to the Demer valley. We pass through the idyllic Demerbroeken and reach the station of Testelt.
