The Two Battles Route takes you past two historic battles. This of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, where the French were pandered to by the Flemish, and that of the Battle of Westrozebeke, where the opposite happened (at least for the people of Ghent). We are then in the 14th century. In the second battle, strong revenge was taken by the French for that first defeat. For example, the collected "golden spurs" disappeared to Paris and the belfry clock, the Jacquemart, to Dijon.Centuries later, this area would once again witness a human massacre, but in WWI.
