HOUWAARTSE MOUNTAIN WALK - the valley of the Motte!

This walk starts at the church of Houwaart. We come out to a large open field via a narrow walking path. In the distance, we see a Hageland hill in the landscape, this is the Houwaartsberg. We continue walking and after 1 km we pass a chapel named Chapel St. Joseph under the linden trees. We then pass by the slopes of the Houwaartsberg. The first vineyards appear on these slopes. Between kilometer 1 and 2 of the walk, you have a very typical Hageland environment. After walking 2 km, we exchange the vineyards for a hollow road that leads us to the top of the Houwaartsberg over a distance of 350 meters. When we reach the top, there is a panoramic moment. At the top of the mountain, you look out over the entire region. At the top, you will encounter a few more vineyards. After that, we start to descend along some forest paths and a cobbled stretch. When we are 4.5 km in, we head back towards the Houwaartsberg, albeit from a different side. At 5 km on the clock, we go back up and down the hill. Via some field paths we go to the busiest point of the walk. Just before we reach 6 km, we have to cross the National Road (N223). Once we cross the road, we walk into the estate of Horst. We enter the forest behind Horst Castle. We walk through this forest and after 7 km we take a field path along the Winge, a tributary of the Demer. Via some field paths and quiet paved roads, we head back towards the center of Houwaart. When we reach 9 km, we return to the open meadows behind the church. Via this field path, we head back towards the church of Houwaart, where our walk ends.
