The picturesque Mullem, already known in 877 as Molthem which means 'mulle aarde', is in the list of the 50 most beautiful villages in Flanders. Mullem was also the setting for the TV series 'Hard Labeur' by filming the book 'Hard Labeur' by the Flemish writer Reimond Stijns, born in Mullem in 1850. The Rooigembeek is the local name because it is normally the 'Stampkotbeek' that flows to the Scheldt. Many unpaved paths have a water-permeable pavement which makes the path easy to walk in wet periods.
