The nickname 'Denderhoutemse Turfboeren' dates from the mid-19th century. In the marshy valleys of the Wildebeek and the Paardenbeek, peat was harvested. The pieces of semi-decayed plant remains (peat) were dried. The peat farmers later sold this as cheap fuel. This path runs close to the border from Ninove to Herlinckhove.
