Averbode Abbey - Nature Reserve Gerhagen

Discover the Splendor of Autumn through Nature Reserves Gerhagen - Averbode Forest and Heath, part of the nature reserve 'de Merode'

During our most recent hike, we were treated to an unforgettable experience in a beautiful nature reserve, which stretches across three different provinces of Flanders. Our journey began at the parking lot of the Gerhagen nature reserve in Tessenderlo, located in the province of Limburg, near the border of Vlaams-Brabant's Okselaar, and led us through a rich variety of landscapes and sights.

Our first stop was the impressive VVV tower. An observation platform with a 'free' telescope and a height of 20 meters offered a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. From here, we could admire the lush nature around us and got a preview of the beauty that awaited us. Not recommended for hikers with a fear of heights, as the tower may slightly sway.

After enjoying the panoramic view, we descended and began our walk through the picturesque Gerhagen nature reserve. This area is known for its dense forests and scenic ponds and pools - The Pearls in the Heath. The sound of chirping birds and the gentle rustle of leaves accompanied us as we ventured deeper into the area.

From Gerhagen, our journey continued to the Averbode Forest and Heath nature reserve, which spans the three provincial borders of Limburg, Antwerp, and Vlaams-Brabant. Here, we were surrounded by vast heathlands and colorful flora. The diversity of landscapes provided an engaging and varied hiking experience.

From the Klompenmuseum in Laakdal, we headed towards the dried-up Convent ponds and a beautiful sand dune at Weefbergven, before again stepping eastward.

Eventually, we reached the historic Abbey of Averbode in Vlaams-Brabant. A beautiful place that served as a fitting snack stop with an Averbode beer and cheese, available in the abbey shop or the abbey café in the experience center 'The Moment'.

The centuries-old architecture and the beautiful mirror pond in front of the abbey added a cultural value to this journey.

This hike through the nature reserves Gerhagen - Averbode Forest and Heath not only offered a variety of natural landscapes but also took us through three different provinces. It highlighted the beauty and diversity of this region and gave us a deeper appreciation for the wonderful heath and pond nature and cultural treasures that Flanders has to offer. It was a day to cherish, and we look forward to discovering more of this natural and cultural wealth in the future.
