Promenade de la Haute Sambre

The walk begins at the foot of the Castle of Solre-sur-Sambre. The castle, dating from the early 14th century, is located at the confluence of the Thure and the Sambre rivers and was used to defend the border. The castle, with its medieval military architecture characteristic of Hainaut, has retained its quadrangular shape and features round towers at the corners that reinforce the structure. The Thure provides water to the moat surrounding the castle. At the bend of the path that runs around the castle and crosses the Thure, stands the church of Saint-Médard proudly. Saint-Médard accompanies the procession during the folk parade of the Between-Sambre-and-Meuse on the second Sunday of June. When you arrive at the main road, take a moment to stop at the bell tower built in 1792, which is classified. After crossing the fields along the forest, you can behold the abbey farm of Thure. It is the only remnant of an Augustinian canoness abbey from the 13th century.
