From the city with the 5 bell towers to the city of the Hurlus
Prepare for two days in Picardic Wallonia, between Tournai and Mouscron, along the French border. You depart on foot or by bike from Tournai, the city with the five bell towers, a name that owes itself to the five towers of the cathedral. The city is also one of the oldest in Belgium. It has preserved numerous traces of its many centuries-old history in its architecture. Among other things, you can admire the oldest belfry in Belgium and the Notre-Dame Cathedral, both heritage pieces from the Middle Ages and included by UNESCO as World Heritage.
The Museum of Fine Coasts showcases a very different style and was designed by Victor Horta. It features paintings by great names from the art world, from the Middle Ages to today. You leave Tournai along the beautiful and recently restored banks of the Scheldt, heading towards Mont-Saint-Aubert. As a reward for climbing this hill, you will be treated to a magnificent view of the city of Tournai and its surrounding countryside.
After a walk along the canals, you will discover the Domain and Castle of Bourgogne and arrive in Mouscron where you can admire the famous Graven castle. The city has been nicknamed "cité des Hurlus," which refers to the Protestant rebels during the religious wars of the 16th century and the festival of the Hurlus that arose from it. This popular festival takes place every first weekend of October with a parade of folkloric characters and the music of trumpets and drummers.
It will be an outing in Picardic Wallonia that will surprise you!
