Cape to the East – Between Vesder and Culinary Delights
We present to you an excursion of several days between the East Cantons and the city of Liège, an area with multiple languages, hilly terrain, rich history, and close to Germany and the Netherlands. You start in Eupen, the capital of the German-speaking Community of Belgium. It is a city with numerous historical monuments, stunning nature, and excellent gastronomy. As you stroll through the streets, you discover the architecture of the many buildings in Baroque style, dating from the glory period of the textile industry (17th and 18th centuries). The lake and the dam of Eupen, sometimes called “Vesder Dam” and 63 meters high, offer an exceptional view. This is the largest artificial lake in Belgium.
After a few kilometers in the East Cantons, you take the path, either on foot or by bike, from the area between the Vesder and Maas rivers in the Land of Herve. You will discover typical farms from the 17th and 18th centuries, hedge landscapes (bocages in French), orchards, and hedges. The Land of Herve is known for its culinary delights and its numerous local products such as the famous Herve cheese, apple and pear syrup, and cider. The former railway line – now RAVeL line 38 – forms the backbone of the Land of Herve. It even won the award for “Best European Green Route” in 2021. By bike, you continue along this beautiful Line 38 to Liège. On foot, you head towards the valley of the Vesder, its river sections, and its curiosities stemming from its industrial past.
You conclude your walk along the river in Chaudfontaine where you can visit the Thermen or Fort Aventure. Whether you are a cyclist or a hiker, the finish line is in Liège, a particularly dynamic heritage city that certainly deserves a longer stay.
