Description by the author

The route takes you past some important sights in Ghent. The city became quite important in the 9th century. Charlemagne allowed the city to have its own fleet to stop the Normans. In 879, the city began to erect its first wooden fortification. Today you can still find place names here that refer to that wooden palisade.

You can start in Sint-Amandsberg, the largest borough of Ghent. The earliest known settlement on this site dates back to the 7th century. According to legend, Saint Amandus of Ghent resurrected a person after he died by hanging from the gallows. The 'mountain' where this scene took place was eventually named after the saint: 'the Amandsberg'.

Once in the center of Ghent, you will pass several sights including the St. Bavo's Abbey from the seventh century and the Devil's Stone, where some 15th-century frescoes were recently discovered. The famous St. Peter's Square with St. Peter's Abbey is also on the route. Today the square is located right in the student area and near the Ghent University Library, better known as the Boekentoren. Here is kept the famous book 'Vita Sancti Amandi', a text from the beginning of the eighth century about the life of Saint Amandus.

Another must-see is the Gravensteen, one of the most impressive examples of medieval defence architecture. It was originally built as protection against the Normans in the 9th century and later had many extensions. The walk comes to an end in Patershol, a district with a unique historical value. Stroll along the narrow alleys and discover the beauty that the district has to offer.
