Through the peat landscape of Baraque Michel

The High Fens form a landscape that is not easily recognizable. This walk begins at Baraque Michel, an inn established in the 19th century in the midst of the heath. In times of fog or snowstorm, a bell was rung here to guide lost walkers back.

From the Fischbach chapel, we follow the boardwalk. Beneath our feet, the water sounds — ringing, flowing — as if the moor itself is breathing. We find ourselves on a spongy ground, formed by centuries of decaying plants. The spruce forests have been recently cut down in an attempt to restore the landscape to its original state: an open, wet raised bog.

The path takes us past the Great Fen and further to the Cross of the Betrothed, a quiet reminder of François and Marie, who perished here in January 1871 during a snowstorm. The peatlands give way to the rugged bed of the ru de Polleur. The path winds between alders and birches, sometimes narrow, sometimes muddy.

Further on, we reach the “Six Beech Trees”: six beeches, lost in a sea of conifers. The return journey takes us past Fagne Setay, where the landscape opens up again. The hike is long, but remains captivating — a walk through an area that reveals its secrets only slowly.
