Along the Amblève and through the Wolfsbuch

As soon as the Amblève leaves Montenau and seeks its way through the meadows, it cuts a deep groove through the Ardennes massif. Montenau is located on the edge of the Wolfsbuch, one of the largest forests in the region. The name refers to the wolf, which was still spotted here until the 18th century.

The walk begins on a broad, quiet road that winds along the hill. Soon we descend towards the river, which has swollen in the autumn due to the rain. The path follows the Amblève, sometimes over boardwalks that keep us dry above the swamp. The other side is more open: the coniferous forest gives way to meadows and hedges.

Before we continue towards Ondenval, an open space offers a view of the Wolfsbuch and the surrounding hills. The proximity of the village makes it conceivable that a fox might suddenly come down the slope — a brief encounter, then silence again.

For the last kilometers, we follow the river upstream. The valley is boggy here, but the path remains passable. What we see along the way — the interplay of water, light, and autumn colors — forms a fitting end to this peaceful journey through a lesser-known part of the East Cantons.

Parking: In the vicinity of the Montenau monastery (near Ligneuville).
Start: Walk in the direction of Montenau. After 100 meters, follow the road to the right.
Recommendation: Regular hiking shoes. Bring water and a picnic. Dining options in Montenau and Ligneuville.
