Duisburg: between Zoniën and Meerdaal

Picturesque hike through the hilly wine region and crisscrossing over the slopes of the green Ijsedal. Centuries-old sunken paths alternate with open high plateaus, rewarding us with breathtaking views in all four directions. The formation of the sunken paths is mainly attributed to an interaction between man and nature. The use of certain field paths removed the vegetation and promoted natural erosion. In the west, we walk a little at the edge of the Sonian Forest, and in the east, we are a stone's throw away from the Meerdaal Forest.
At the bottom of the magnificent Gothic Sacred Heart Church in Huldenberg lies the cozy people's café "Casino" by Herman Vanderveken (Gemeenteplein 23, closed on Mondays all day and Tuesday mornings). Here is a welcome break with a bowl of hot fresh soup and while enjoying the packed picnic.
In this triangle between Brussels, Leuven, and Waver, it is so different from the stacked Flanders. Here you get a different kind of breath.
So close to the big city of Brussels, this is an extraordinary hike for experienced walkers. This tour has no designated signage.
