AzureThis route through Oud Borgerhout starts and ends at the cultural centre De Roma. You avoid the busy Turnhoutsebaan as much as possible and you explore the narrow streets of the 'nineteenth-century belt'. Intra muros means: within the Brialmont wall that was demolished in the 1960s and made way for the Ring.
Everywhere in this zone you can see witnesses of a rich history: schools and squares, civic houses and industrial buildings, street art, railways, churches and cafes, mainly from the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. The two world wars and a catastosal urban development policy in the 1960s-1970s have left heavy scars in the urban fabric, but what remains of the glory days deserves a brisk walk.
