Scheldetalroute 3

The province of East Flanders has developed three cycling routes along the Upper Scheldt. The first two routes run between Ghent and Gavere, and between Gavere and Oudenaarde, each covering a longer section along the banks of the Scheldt and further through the Scheldt valley. The third route described here connects Oudenaarde with Berchem (Kluisbergen). This part of the Scheldt valley is also very scenic and ecologically noteworthy. The separated channels of the Scheldt that you see along the way are an excellent example of this. Additionally, the human contribution along the route is also appreciated in the form of some valuable buildings. Before or after your cycling tour, you should definitely admire the historic town hall in the market square of Oudenaarde. This example of Brabantine Late Gothic from the 16th century is only surpassed in size by city halls like those in Brussels and Leuven, not in beauty.

SAFETY
Large parts of the route run on the shipping route of the Scheldt, where no cars are allowed. Caution is advised at some intersections, such as at the Scheldt bridge in Kerkhove.

Mostly well-paved road. Some sections of dirt paths can cause a bit of mud during the wet season. Almost entirely flat. 30% traffic-free.
