Avelgem Scheldt Meadows

The nature reserve de Avelgemse Scheldemeersen is located between the old railway bed, the Scheldt, the Rijt, and Rugge. The area is divided into several cuts or separated Scheldt meanders (17th - 18th century) such as cut Marcel Deweer, Dirty cut, Prairie cut, and Miracle cut. The formation of the Scheldt valley dates back to the Ice Age due to the strong current of melting ice water that caused the deposition of sand and gravel. Departure Meersstraat 45, Avelgem, parking is available at the company (on the right at the junction). The Nature Educational Center is further along the unpaved path (we will pass it last on the walking route). Unfortunately, the walking map (available on the site and in the brochure that can be obtained for free at the information board) is not adapted to the markers in the field, particularly on the red route.
