Description by the author

Take a look at the photos of this walk

We did this beautiful, varied hike on 06-10-2023

You can park and leave in the spacious pedestrian car park of the 'Klein Engelandhoeve'. We did the walk clockwise, so we first went up a piece of ' Jos Aerts walking path' . Via a QR code on an information board, you can listen to Jos' story, in the Turnhout dialect, and also download the 'Jos Aerts walk'.

Soon you arrive at the Dombergstraat which crosses the N119 and also the ' Bels lijntje', an old railway line. Along this side of the N119 one crosses the ' Dombergheide ' which is part of the 'Turnhoutse Vennengebied'. The walk takes you to the Dessel-Schoten Canal, which you follow along the towpath for a while and then dive into a beautiful piece of nature. You pass a pool that bears the name 'Het Kot' and has a high natural value. A little further on, you come to the 'Hooiweide' where a large bench in nature invites you to take a break. The walk takes you through the 'Watertappingstraat' to the 'Laguitstraat', a cobblestone street that leads to the N119.

The N119 is followed for a short distance to soon return to the Turnhouts Vennengebied. Of course, you can find fens in a fens area. The walk takes you along the 'Peerdsven', where leeches used to be bred for medicinal use. Near the fen you can find the beautiful forester's house in the 'Langvenstraat'. The walk continues on forest paths, paved and unpaved roads until you reach the 'Paul de Vicq – Ven', a tribute to 'Baron-Colonel Paul de Vicq de Cumptich', a man who had lost his heart to nature. A little further on you will pass the very special 'Koeivenheide'. The habitat that occurs on the wet heath is rare in Europe. Before completing the loop, you will pass a nice shed.

Are you out with the dog? Then you have to pay attention! Between junctions 93-51 the walk goes through grazing area. People prefer not to have dogs there. Don't worry, a well-signposted diversion is provided.

Have fun with this hike,

Eddy, Rita and Prinske
