Walking in BorgLoon: A loop through Haspengouw in the footsteps of 'Katarakt'

Groot-Loon, located in the heart of Haspengouw, offers breathtaking scenery that is perfect for a walking adventure. Our 22-kilometer loop takes you through blooming fruit orchards, past historical sites and cultural highlights, providing a unique chance to explore the region as it was seen in the popular television series "Katarakt." Starting Point: The Center of Groot-Loon

Our walk begins in the picturesque center of Groot-Loon. Here you can already enjoy the charm of this historic village with its cozy atmosphere. After a brief exploration of the center, we head into nature towards the orchards that make Haspengouw so famous.

The Doubt Boundary

One of the first stops is the Doubt Boundary, a unique art installation that sits between a fence and a work of art. It forms a symbolic boundary that invites the visitor to reflect on limits and freedoms in a landscape that is constantly changing. This artwork is a perfect spot for a short break and a photo opportunity.

The Viewing Church (Reading Between the Lines)

One of the most iconic sights on our route is the Viewing Church, also known as "Reading Between the Lines." This transparent church, designed by the architectural duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, is constructed from horizontal steel plates and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape. It is a unique place that provides a special mix of art, architecture, and nature.

The Old Roman Road

We continue our walk along a section of the ancient Roman road between Tongeren and Tienen. This historic road, which was once an important connecting route, takes us through idyllic landscapes and offers a glimpse into the rich past of this region. Here you literally walk in the footsteps of history.

First Crossing of Borgloon

Halfway through the route, we reach the center of Borgloon for the first time. This is a good place to rest, grab something to eat or drink, and enjoy the local atmosphere before we continue our way.

The Syrup Factory

Another must-see stop is the old steam syrup factory of Borgloon. This factory, which now serves as a museum and visitor center, tells the story of local syrup production and its significance to the region. Take the time to discover how the famous Haspengouw syrup is made and taste this local delicacy.

The Monastery of Colen (Abbey Mariënlof)

We continue our journey to the Monastery of Colen, also known as Abbey Mariënlof. This impressive abbey, founded in the 15th century, is a place of peace and spirituality. The monastery complex is surrounded by green fields and orchards, inviting reflection and contemplation. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere and beautiful architecture.

Viewpoints

Second Crossing of Borgloon

On our way back, we pass through Borgloon again. This gives us the opportunity to enjoy the town one last time and perhaps visit one of the local shops or eateries.

Return to Groot-Loon

The final stage of our walk takes us back to the center of Groot-Loon. After a day full of impressions and discoveries, you can relax here at one of the cozy terraces or visit one of the local eateries.
